Hesham El-Rewini has been serving as the Dean of the College of Engineering and Mines at the University of North Dakota since 2008. Under his leadership, the College has seen tremendous success in terms of new academic units and degree programs, enhanced research productivity, improved physical environment, enriched student experience, streamlined college processes, successful fundraising, and healthy work climate. In addition to his duties as dean, El-Rewini served as Senior Vice Provost 2017-2018. He led a team of faculty and staff that implemented strategies to improve student retention and graduation rates. He is also serving as the Champion of the Big Data research Initiative at UND.

Dr. El-Rewini is an experienced leader with a proven track record of administrative experience at both public and private research universities. He is committed to a collaborative leadership style that is honest, transparent, and inclusive. In addition to leadership, he has extensive experience in fundraising, strategic planning, and public speaking. He also taught many courses, published numerous research articles, supervised many M.S. and Ph.D. students, and coauthored several books. In 2016, he was presented the Gordon Henry Award by UND’s Student Government for his commitment to student success. El-Rewini received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Oregon State University in 1990. Prior to becoming the Dean of the College of Engineering and Mines at UND, he served as the Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He is also a registered engineer in the state of Texas.
